Photographer Profile/Biography

Self portrait, 2010Photography has become an intrinsic part of my life and I can't imagine a time when I will ever stop taking images. Once you start, you never stop. My introduction to photograph started innocently enough with the purchase of a small 126 camera whilst on holiday with my parents at the age of ten. Like many new aspiring photographers, I started to realise that you notice things about the world around you many people tend to take for granted Photographers are generally inquisitive types of people by their very nature. Photography, like most art forms, is a natural expression of that interest in the world about them. It is a process dedicated to understanding.

In 1988, I was introduced to printing and processing my own work in a darkroom. It was that introduction that sparked the photography bug. I now had control over all aspects of my work. I can still remember the first signs of my first black and white image starting to appear in the developing tray. Hypnotic is the only word to describe the moment. It just seemed so magical that an image could suddenly appear out of nowhere.

In 1991, I went into further education to learn photography. I started my education at Middlesbrough's Cleveland college of Art studying TV, Film and Photography, that eventually led onto HND and BA (Hons) qualifications. My studies focussed on documentary photography, but later during my education, I became interested in other areas of photography including advertising, PR, architecture and still-life. Film making and the cinema have always been interests, and this year, i have been working as the stills photographer on a vampire film called 'Christian' set in the fabulous Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby.

My first camera - a 126 film Hanimex 88xMany of my influences come from reportage and advertising photography. The list of influences is huge, but I especially admire the work of photographers like Larry Burrows and John Claridge, both of whom have produce(d) work that mixes distinctive reportage image styles with a more artistic commercial look - their photographic images have significantly influenced my work.
